Stories, the ones we tell and the ones we hear, shape our lives. This is excellent news for us, both personally and professionally. It means that we are in charge of the way that we interpret the world and make our way through it.
When many people think of PR, they get a bad taste in their mouths: damage control, spin, lies! In many cases, they are not wrong. But the other way to look at PR is to see it as storytelling, and then ask yourself: what story do I want to tell about my business or my life? And pressingly, what story should I tell? The answer, of course, is to tell the one that is most honest. Tell the one that feels the most authentic, even if it is a little bit aspirational. Tell the one that you can own and stand behind. Tell the one that is shaped around your truth, and not one that is trying to shape itself into some perceived mold that exists in some imaginary public realm.
This isn't some moral high-ground. It’s what actually works. The best way to get good press is to do good and meaningful work, then tell the world about it in the most honest way you can. Authenticity speaks. Own your story! Own the source.
This can certainly be liberating when perception and intent are in alignment...
well said.
